Pushing Projections
April, 2005
Office complex helps medical center meet demand
Post
Falls, ID - It is, in a word, "amazing."
This once-tiny community is now home to one of the most modern, complete
medical care facilities in the Northwest.
On Thursday, a good 500 members of the community turned out for an
open house on the latest phase of this city's medical district, as
Northwest Specialty Hospital opened up its Northwest Medical Office
Building for a public viewing.
"I was in awe," said Angela Alexander, president and CEO of the Post
Falls Chamber of Commerce, after touring the facility. "It's amazing.
You couldn't have imagined this 10 years ago."
The ultramodern facility uses the latest in technology to help physicians
give their patients personal attention by allowing connections to
all the doctors in the offices.
"We can communicate with specialists in the building, with them swinging
in to see the patient with us," said Dr. Kirk Hjeltness, M.D., CEO
of North Idaho Medical Care Center, which expanded its services with
a move into the new complex.
The technology includes a wireless network, allowing doctors to call
up patient information while attending them.
"We can pull up their scans and their lab results," he said.
The rooms in the facility have been designed so the small computers
used never get between physician and patient, helping prevent distraction,
he said.
Moving to the new offices also allowed them to expand their family
care with three new practitioners at the former location just a few
blocks away. That facility also improves access for occupational and
sports medicine, with the new offices providing follow-up.
Nick Genna, CEO of Northwest, said he's been pleased with the success
of the hospital. That 49,000-square-foot facility beat all projections
by 60 percent, he said.
"It shows the growth of health care in the area," he said. "We're
meeting the needs of the population."
Northwest Specialty Hospital has been open since October of 2003.
Since then, a number of new additions for the community have been
added. NSH has a new conference room available for community meetings
and uses. For example, a smoking cessation class will soon be offered.
The new MRI suite is the only open MRI of its magnitude in the Pacific
Northwest.
That, combined with Inland Cardiology's 64-slice CT scanner, one of
the first in the country, gives the region a capacity for service
that's been well received.
"We did it without any impact to the local competition," Genna said.

Local Emergency Physician Certified
by MROCC
September, 2004
as Medical Review Officer
Coeur d' Alene, ID - Dr. James P. Winter, MD,
RPH, FACEP, AACT of Coeur d'Alene affiliated with North Idaho Medical
Care Centers recently qualified as a certified Medical Review Officer
(MRO). Dr. Winter is the Medical Director of Acute Care Services of
NIMCC.
Dr. Winter was re-certified by the Medical Review Officer Certification
Council (MROCC), an independent physician-based certifying body which
conducts an extensive application process and written examination to
identify licensed physicians with the highest professional standards
of medical expertise and practical skills necessary to evaluate drug
and alcohol test results in public and private sectors of the workplace.
The U.S. Department of Transportation, and U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services, most Fortune 500 corporations and many smaller companies
require employee drug and alcohol testing today. Federal law mandates
that a qualified MRO must make the final determination of whether a
positive laboratory test represents substance abuse. The certified MRO
may also act as a valuable resource to protect the company, helping
with policies and regulatory issues, as well as providing related services
such as drug testing collections, breath alcohol testing services, coordination
of laboratory services, laboratory performance testing, and preparation
of summary reports for employers. MROCC certification indicates that
a physician is well prepared to handle workplace drug and alcohol testing
programs and to help mange chemical dependency.
The MROCC Board of Directors represent a multi-specialty partnership
among a variety of medical specialty groups - the American College of
Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the American Academy of Clinical
Toxicologists, the American College of Medical Toxicology, the American
Society of Addiction Medicine, the College of American Pathologists
- as well as the American Medical Association.
Dr. Winter has continued an Associate Medical Directorship for the Washington
State Poison Control Center for the past 15 years, is past Medical Director
of the Emergency Department of Valley Hospital, and is past Medical
Director of EMS-Paramedic Services of Valley Fire Department. Dr. Winter
also continues his consulting firm, Emergency Associates and Consulting,
with emphasis in emergency medicine, EMS-prehospital emergency care,
toxicology and poisonings, pharmacy practice and law, herbal and alternative
medicine problems, and medical legal opinions. He continues to write
on various topics. He recently was honored receiving the Silver Mortar
Award, from the National President of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity,
for 25 years of professional contribution. He has been highlighted at
National Meetings, which this year included a national presentation
to physicians, nurses, and officers on the epidemic problem of methamphetamine,
entitled: "Meth - Still a Cookin."

New Owners for North Idaho MEDICAL
Care Centers March 24, 2004
After
nearly 18 years as creator and sole proprieter of North Idaho Immediate
Care Center (NIICC), Dr. Jack Riggs has passed the gavel. In 1985,
Dr. Riggs left the emergency room of KMC to begin the designing and
building of north Idaho's first comprehensive immediate care center
in Coeur d'Alene.
As of January 2004, NIICC has a new name and an expanded ownership
team. It is now a Professional Limited Liability Company (PLLC) called
North Idaho MEDICAL Care Centers, PLLC, and is owned by nine area
physicians, including Dr, Jack Riggs, Dr. Dr. Kirk Hjeltness, M.D.
(CEO), Dr. Cooper Wester, Dr. Daniel Yovichin, Dr. Michael Harris,
Dr. Jim Winter, Dr. Jon Lueders, Dr. Romeo Pavlic, and Dr. Peter Obligato.
"This change was made to provide a better business model for patient
service and growth," Dr. Riggs said. "Everything we do here is about
better patient service. This will allow NIMCC to grow with our communities,
and to provide more convenient and expanded medical services into
the future, throughout North Idaho."
CEO Dr. Kirk Hjeltness, M.D., MD, agreed, saying, "There are very
exciting things planned to improve NIMCC's effectiveness and delivery
of quality health care." The transition "went smoothly and seamlessly,"
Dr. Hjeltness, M.D. said, "and we intend to keep it that way! Any
perceptable changes to patients will only be positive ones."
Since its inception, the Coeur d'Alene based company was known as
North Idaho Immediate Care Center. However, over the years, there
have been additions of two more facilities, in Post Falls and Hayden,
as well as more medical "pathways" - Worker Care, Family Care, and
Sports Care.
"There was a need for us to be more than just a place for Immediate
Care. Our patients had other medical care needs, too," Dr. Riggs said.
NIMCC Pathways
IMMEDIATE Care
The Immediate Care pathway was started in 1986, making NIMCC the longest
continously running immediate care facility in the State of Idaho,
with a service area that now covers over 10 percent of the population
of the state. Each of the three immediate care facilities provides
walk-in service daily from 8am to 8pm, offering immediate care without
emergency room prices.
WORKER Care
Worker Care, also known as industrial care, has been a model for workplace
injury treatment since NIMCC first opened in 1986. Now serving over
1,500 area companies, NIMCC is the largest Worker Care provider north
of Boise. The Worker Care pathway consists of three main components,
the Work Injury Program, the Drug Free Workplace Program, and the
Periodic Physical Program.
The Work Injury Program practices a "rapid return to work" policy,
with in-house case management and an injury prevention program. "Clear
and concise communication with employers, workers and insurance companies
is what sets this program apart from other providers," Sandi Teall
said, NIMCC's Worker Care Program Manager. "Our consistently strong
reputation and commitment to the community, employers and workers,
enables us to continue growing this program."
The Drug Free Workplace Program offers guidance with policy development
and MRO (Medical Review Officer) selection, express drug testing,
DOT and Non-DOT testing, on a pre-employment, random, or post-injury
basis. "We have DOT certified drug screen collectors and breath alcohol
technicians at each of our locations," Dr. Hjeltness, M.D. explained,
the Medical Director of NIMCC's Worker Care.
The Periodic Physicals Program provides pre-employment (post-job-offer)
physicals, DOT physicals, OSHA respiratory exams, and other periodic
physicals.
FAMILY Care
The Family Care pathway was added in 1996 and has become a thriving
sector of NIMCC's services. Five family medicine specialists make
up the Family Care pathway: Dr. Adele Lindstrom in Coeur d'Alene,
Dr.'s Dana Wilson and Mike Harris in Post Falls, and Dr.'s Cooper
Wester and Dan Yovichin in Hayden. The Family Care pathway offers
separate waiting areas and provides medical service by appointment.
"Having both Family Care and Immediate Care pathways in the same facility
is extremely convenient for our patients who use both," Dr. Cooper
Wester explained, Medical Director for Family Care. "A Family Care
patient can be seen without an appointment for an immediate need and
have a more thorough visit because their Family Care medical records
are on site. This reduces wait time and check-in paperwork, and allows
a more efficient evaluation by the immediate care physician."
SPORTS Care
The Sports Care pathway is the newest medical service provided by
NIMCC, with Dr. Mike Harris and Dr. Dana Wilson offering services
in this pathway at the Post Falls facility. Both have advanced specialty
training in sports medicine.
"What makes this addition special is our Family Care patients do not
have to find a new physician to treat their sports related injuries,"
Dr. Harris said, Medical Director for the new Sports Care Program.
"Additionally, we work closely with local physical therapists and
orthopedic surgeons, when necessary, to ensure continuity of care."
